Dear Readers,
Ever since I started my journey to obtaining my Bachelor’s of Science degree in Education, I have been exposed to many things; one of these things being the impact that literature has in the overall framework of the elementary classroom. Not only does literature itself affect the class in such a dynamic way, but the type of literature one classroom is exposed to is very important. It is my goal as an elementary school teacher to expose students to literature that will not only expand their vocabulary and literacy skills, but also give them a deeper appreciation and understanding of the different type of cultures around them. Multicultural literature has always been a strong interest to me. It has also been a goal of mine to expose students to and teach about different cultures in my classroom. One of the easiest ways to do this is through literature in the classroom. Because of this I conducted research to decide what factors made this learning possible. When conducting research, I used these specific questions as a guide:
What are the overall benefits to allowing students to read multicultural literature? Are there any cognitive benefits to exposing students to multicultural literature? What effects does it have an English/Language Arts? Reading? Writing? What makes this type of literature important to students? What social effects does multicultural literature have on the development of a child? What do students take away from multicultural literature?
I believe these questions will help me to find the answers I am looking for. During the duration of the research process I hope to find the answers to these particular questions. As a future teacher, I know these answers will ultimately guide me in finding multicultural literature to include in my curriculum. By knowing more about the effects that the literature has on the students and how it affects the language arts curriculum I can make a tremendously informed decision regarding the literature used in the classroom.
Let’s take a look at what I found!
